The origin of Coworking

The 20th Century had separated time from space. The 40 hour week was presented like a harmonious allocation of time between work and relaxation or personal activities. This same tidy research also divided professionals from amateurs, the place of work, the company was clearly separated from the home or personal life. Only some intellectuals and some artists continued to mix the different facets of their lives in public places and in cafes, those of Venice and St Germain des Prés.

The transformation of work and of companies within the phase of globalisation has upset this separation of time and space, these disruptions are particularly noticeable in the world of the Internet, TIC and informatics.

It is within this context and in reference to literature cafés and to a certain nomadic culture that the idea of situating oneself within a third location, neither company nor home has evolved. A concept which is epitomised in the project Coworking places which offers and enables separate individuals to meet each other within these locations, to make a living, to exchange information, knowledge and projects.

What is Coworking ?

Born in the wake of Barcamps, Coworking is a genuine global network of temporary meeting places for a community which now searches for more sustainable locations. A network which enables its participants to have access to the offices in more than 70 cities in the entire world (more than 20 countries are involved).

The principle ideas of Coworking

Everyone is welcome, regardless of their interests (professional, personal, community etc), without ever forgetting that Coworking carries some strong values : Collaboration, Openness, Community and Durability.
A ” Test ” does not exist to determine whether you are a coworking space or not, but it is important that those who label themselves as Coworking respect its values.
